Glen Hayward
Better Paul Saul is an installation of carved and painted wooden security cameras and signs by New Zealand sculptor Glen Hayward, presented by PAULNACHE at Booth A06, Carriageworks, Sydney Contemporary 2026.
Hand-carved from wood and assembled from photographs taken across international destinations — London, Austria, Switzerland, Sydney and New York — these humble objects speak to the oldest of human impulses: carving as proto-writing, mark-making, encounter with material. The work takes its title from a question about conversion: what did Saul leave behind on the road to becoming Paul, and was the uncertainty of those three blind days the more honest revelation?
The installation turns surveillance back on itself. Security cameras are meant to be positioned above us, half-consciously noted, instilling the awareness that we may be watched and found guilty. By carving these objects in wood and placing them just above eye level, Hayward repositions the viewer: you are not surveilled, you are in dialogue. The viewer becomes the subject of the look — unaware, at first, that they are looking at art and not simply seeing it. To stand in a public space and simply look around, not transacting, not consuming, is already a transgressive act. Better Paul Saul makes that act visible.

Step into Better Paul Saul, Hayward’s installation of hand-carved wooden security cameras and signs — each one a faithful replica of a real camera photographed in cities including London, Austria, Switzerland, Sydney and New York. Hand-carved from wood and painted, these humble objects turn surveillance back on itself, inviting dialogue rather than watching. Listen to Hayward discuss the ideas behind the work, from carving as an ancient form of mark-making to the title’s nod to Saul’s uncertain road to Paul.
