Preview: Friday 1 August 2025, 6–8PM
Exhibition: 1 August – 30 September 2025

You are warmly invited to join us this evening for the opening of Conor’s first exhibition at the Gisborne Gallery, PAULNACHE Upstairs 89 Grey Street Gisborne 4010 NZ. The artist will attend.

Born in 1969 in Tairāiwhiti Gisborne, New Zealand, from Ngāti Porou te iwi descent. A self-taught artist, Conor works under the umbrella of contemporary Māori art. Since 1991 he has worked in a multidisciplinary process from papier mache, thermo-plastic modelling, music, theatre, silver-smithing, ceramics, wood and stone carving, fur cloak-making, leather gang-patch textiles, photography and print-making, digital graphics, film-making and jewellery fabrication. Conorhas also shown in the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, and regularly exhibits bodies of work. He finds that each piece leads to the next:

“If laid out in a line you would see how each material and expression directly influences the next regardless of the media and technique involved...”

In his exhibition I. Object. at PAULNACHE, Conor’s latest works are a mix of found materials and reclaimed native woods used to create inspiring sculptural carved Rimu Palisades (defensive wall), Whare (meeting house) and Maunga (mountainous landscapes) that appear to hover allowing playful light and shadow to illuminate these simplified forms and their significance. His work can be discovered in collections throughout Aotearoa and around the world.
