Potenger, A
"I think of painting as a space where images accumulate and generate meaning through proximity... a way of working rooted in the childhood logic of my sticker books.."
Amy Potenger (b. 1988) is a Tamaki Makaurau Auckland artist working in painting, drawing, collage, and printmaking. Her practice looks at how memory and visual systems take shape through patient, gradual layering. Drawing on a personal archive of found objects, text, and childhood ephemera, she moves constantly between Photoshop and the canvas. Hand-cut stencils and offcuts from earlier paintings are built into new works, so past and present sit side by side and viewers must look closely to tell paint from applied material.
Amy completed a Master of Visual Arts with First Class Honours at AUT in 2022 and is now a practice-led PhD candidate there. She completed a printmaking residency at Auckland Print Studios in Ruakaka and has been a finalist in the NZ Painting and Printmaking Awards, the National Contemporary Art Awards, and the Cleveland Art Awards.
Hayward, G
"I work at the intersection of carving and painting, I find all the world of things endlessly fascinating and potentially meaningful. This way of making solves two tensions, one my tendency to be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of things, the time it takes to carve things limits the number of things I can make. The second is more process based, it acknowledges that selection of the 'thing' reflects a way of understanding the world, as the ready-made enacts. Although the world is fecund the mere presentation of it shows - an angle not all angles. To make a ready-made incites a value for the thing depicted, it permits a physical understanding of the world through making and parallels this through viewing."
Glen Hayward was born in 1974 in Auckland New Zealand and is known for his sculptures of everyday, mass-produced items. Carved from wood and painted exactly as they were as found objects, they masquerade as the real. Hayward completed his doctoral dissertation at Auckland University's Elam School of Fine Arts in 2005.
